1. INTRODUCTION
===============

What is PC APP?
---------------
The Portfolio was designed mainly for users of IBM PC and compatible
desk-top computers who want to have a portable extension to their
desk-bound PC.

This PC APP program is a modified version of the built-in Portfolio
software for a desk-top PC. You can now run the same software on both
machines, so that for example the same diary can be easily maintained
wherever you are.

In what way is it modified?
---------------------------
Certain parts of APP needed to be modified as the exact same
facilities do not exist on both machines, or not quite in the same
way. The main differences between desktop and Portfolio applications
are:

Application	Difference on Desktop PC
-----------	------------------------
All Selectable screen sizes and positions

System Display option different
		No Keyboard click
		No Keyboard choice
		Definable directory for resource files

Address Book	No tone dialling

Diary Requires separate program to sound alarms
		(ALARM.EXE)

Editor, Worksheet and Calculator - no differences

2. INSTALLATION
===============
WARNING: The APP.EXE program is self-modifying, so if the disk write
protect tab is used or the file is set to read-only, the program will
not retain certain information (such as the directory where it is
located) between each session. This may be inconvenient but does not
prevent use.

Hard disk
---------
1.	Decide where on your hard disk you want the software to be
stored (e.g. C:\POCKETPC). This directory is the equivalent of the
C:\SYSTEM directory on the Portfolio, where the application setup
files are stored.

2.	Insert the APP disk in the floppy drive A:

3.	Type:

	C: [RETURN]
	MD \POCKETPC [RETURN]
	CD \POCKETPC [RETURN]
	COPY A:\APP\*.* [RETURN]

Floppy disk
-----------
It is wise to take a backup of the whole disk (by using a utility
such as DISKCOPY) before starting to use it.

Insert the disk in your floppy drive (e.g. A:) and type:

	A:\APP\APP [RETURN]

The files
---------
The APP program consists of two files; APP.EXE and ALARM.EXE. They
create further 'housekeeping' files as they are used, as found on the
C:\SYSTEM directory on the Portfolio:

PERMDATA.DAT	Stores information such as last used
		filenames and defaults.

UNDELETE.DAT	Stores deletions which can be
		recovered using [F4].

CLIPBORD.DAT	Stores the Clipboard, which can
		be used using [F3].

The creation of CLIPBORD.DAT and UNDELETE.DAT can be suppressed using
the Applications option in Setup.

DIARY.DAT This is NOT found on the Portfolio, as
it is never truly switched off like a PC.
This file contains the information about
			alarms used by ALARM.EXE. ALARM
can be used to reactivate alarms after the
PC has been switched on, without first
			using APP (see Section 4).

The directory where these files are stored is initially set to be the
same directory where APP itself is located. If you wish to change
this, select the Applications Directory option in Setup. The files
will then be saved in the new location, but the originals will not be
deleted. Use the DOS delete function instead.

3. USING THE APPLICATIONS SOFTWARE
==================================

APP is designed to be as close as possible to the Portfolio software
and to avoid repetition, it is assumed that you are already familiar
with how to use the Portfolio. Please refer to your Owner's manual
for details on how to use the Portfolio software.

Starting up
-----------
APP can be started from the DOS command line in the same way as the
Portfolio by typing any of:

APP /Z or APP	Main menu
APP /A Go directly to Address Book
APP /C Calculator
APP /D Diary
APP /E Editor
APP /S Setup
APP /W Worksheet

There is no 'hot-key' equivalent to the Portfolio's [/|\] key.

NOTE:	The first time APP is used it must be invoked from the
current directory. In other words if the directory used is
C:\POCKETPC, type:

	C: [RETURN]
	CD \POCKETPC [RETURN]
	APP [RETURN]

If you do not do this, the program may forget certain information
such as the name of the last used file.

Using different frame sizes
---------------------------
The different applications can each be positioned in different
positions on the screen, in a variety of sizes. There are a total of
11 options for each application. The main menu and Setup cannot be
moved.

To change the default position and/or size of a frame, select the
Display option in Setup in the usual way. Note that it is completely
different! You are asked first to select the application whose
position you wish to change. Select Address book, Calculator, Diary,
Editor or Worksheet.

You are then offered 11 different options which are described by
their position and size. They are:

Description Size Start Position
----------- ---- --------------
Full screen 80 x 25 Line 1; col 1
Top half 80 x 12 Line 1; col 1
Bottom half 80 x 12 Line 13; col 1
Centre half 80 x 12 Line 7; col 1
Left top 40 x 12 Line 1; col 1
Right top 40 x 12 Line 1; col 41
Left full 40 x 25 Line 1; col 1
Right full 40 x 25 Line 1; col 41
Left bottom 40 x 12 Line 13; col 1
Right bottom 40 x 12 Line 13; col 41
Centre small 40 x 8 Line 7; col 21

Using APP
---------
APP runs in text mode in monochrome, so will work on any screen, but
not in colour.

Remember when using the File Transfer option in Setup, that one side
of the connection MUST be set to Server. You might find it easier to
use the FT program provided with the Parallel peripheral rather than
File Transfer built into APP.

4. ALARMS
=========

You can set alarms in the Diary in the same way as on the Portfolio.
Alarms are stored in RAM memory, which on a PC is cleared every time
it is switched off. On the Portfolio it is retained.

Future alarms will therefore be lost every time the desktop PC is
switched off, so unlike the Portfolio, your desktop will not wake
itself up and sound an alarm.

Reposting alarms after switching on
-----------------------------------
Alarms are saved on the Portfolio every time the Diary is exited and
a file called DIARY.DRY in the C:\SYSTEM subdirectory is saved.

The same applies on the PC, but although the PC file still needs to
be called DIARY.DRY, it is stored in the same directory as the other
data files, such as PERMDATA and CLIPBORD. This need not be
C:\SYSTEM.

When DIARY.DRY is created, any alarm entries are saved in DIARY.DAT.
This information can then used to reactivate the alarms without
needing to invoke the diary, or save the DIARY.DRY file.

The alarms need to be reactivated or reposted every time the PC is
switched on. This is done by the program ALARM.EXE.

To repost the alarms, add the following line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT
file:

	C:\POCKETPC\ALARM

NOTE: Once ALARM has been installed, it should not be reinvoked until
the next time the PC is switched on.
